Quick answer: Nomora connects to Xero under Settings → Invoices → Xero. You sign in to Xero, pick the organisation, and choose the sales account, tax type and branding theme. From then on Xero issues every invoice you create from a booking: Xero numbers it, works out the tax and keeps the contact. When you reconcile the customer's payment in Xero, Nomora picks it up, usually within minutes.
Most small rental firms in the UK, Australia and New Zealand already keep their books in Xero. The usual problem is the gap between the booking system and the books. Someone retypes each rental as a Xero invoice, gets the customer name slightly different, and at month end the bookkeeper finds three invoices nobody can match to a car.
The Nomora connection closes that gap by making Xero the place where invoices are issued. There is no second copy to keep in step.
What the integration does
Xero issues the invoice. You open a booking and click Generate Invoice, as usual. The invoice is created in Xero and approved straight away. Xero assigns the number, and Nomora keeps Xero's number and total on the booking.
The PDF comes from Xero. Downloads and emails from Nomora use the PDF Xero produces, with the logo, layout and payment terms of the branding theme you picked.
Contacts are matched, not duplicated. The invoice editor searches your Xero contacts by the customer's name and selects an exact match. If there is none, you type to search or fill in a new contact from the booking details. A new contact whose name already exists in Xero is matched to that contact, so invoicing the same customer twice does not create a second one.
Tax follows Xero. Each line uses the tax type you chose. To put one line on another tax type, for example a zero-rated item, pick it on that line in the editor.
Payments come back. Xero tells Nomora when an invoice changes, and Nomora also checks every hour. What happens next depends on the invoice:
- Invoices you issue from a booking. When Xero marks the invoice paid, Nomora marks it paid too. You still record the money on the booking, as with other invoicing apps.
- Automatic period invoices for open-ended rentals. Each payment you reconcile in Xero becomes a payment on the booking, against the period it pays. A part payment is recorded as a part payment, and a payment you delete in Xero is reversed in Nomora.
How to connect Xero
- Open Settings → Invoices → Xero and click Connect Xero.
- Sign in to Xero and pick the organisation Nomora should issue invoices in. Nomora never sees your Xero password.
- Back in Nomora, check the organisation name and currency under Xero organisation.
- Choose the Sales account every invoice line is booked to.
- Choose a Tax type, or keep the account's own tax type.
- Choose a Branding theme, or keep Xero's default theme.
- Click Save.
Then issue one test invoice from a real booking and open it in Xero. Check the account, the tax and the contact before you invoice the rest of the month.
Long-term and open-ended rentals
If you rent cars by the week or month, Xero can also issue the automatic period invoices of open-ended rentals. You create the customer as a contact in Xero first, pick that contact on the booking under Automatic invoices, review the periods and switch them on. With One invoice per customer on, a customer's rentals that share the Xero contact, company, address and dates go on one invoice.
Automatic period invoices are being turned on organization by organization. If your business depends on them, mention it on the setup call.
What it does not do
Better to know these before you connect:
- One invoicing app at a time. Turn Invoice123 or Monet off before you connect Xero. With Xero connected, Xero issues every invoice.
- Currency has to exist in Xero. Invoices go out in your Nomora currency. If your Xero organisation keeps its books in another currency, Xero only accepts the invoice after you add that currency to the Xero organisation. The settings card warns you.
- No credit notes from Nomora. Corrections and credit notes are done in Xero. Credit notes, overpayments and prepayments you apply in Xero are not recorded as booking payments.
- Pro forma invoices stay in Nomora. Xero has no pro forma type, so Nomora renders those itself.
- One Xero organisation per Nomora organization, and a Xero organisation can be connected to one Nomora organization at a time.
- Reconnect when Xero asks. Xero ends a connection that someone removes in Xero or that goes unused for 60 days. Nomora then shows Reconnect needed and does not fall back to its own invoices, so your numbering stays in Xero.
Is it the right setup for you?
Connect Xero if your accountant already works in Xero and you want invoice numbers, tax and contacts kept there. If you do not use accounting software yet, Nomora's built-in invoices may be enough at first: numbered series, your company details, VAT, and a PDF you can email from the booking. You can connect Xero later. Invoices issued before that stay with the app that issued them.

Frequently asked questions
Does Nomora sync invoices to Xero or create them in Xero?
It creates them in Xero. With Xero connected, every invoice from a booking is issued in Xero, approved straight away, and numbered by Xero. Nomora keeps Xero's number, total and PDF.
Do payments in Xero update the booking in Nomora?
Yes. Xero notifies Nomora when an invoice changes, and Nomora also checks every hour. A paid invoice is marked paid in Nomora. On automatic period invoices, each payment you reconcile in Xero is also recorded on the booking against the period it pays.
Can I use Xero and Invoice123 at the same time?
No. A Nomora organization uses one invoicing app. Turn Invoice123 or Monet off before you connect Xero.
Does the Xero integration work in the UK, Australia and New Zealand?
Yes. The connection does not depend on your country. Invoices go out in your Nomora currency, so that currency has to be enabled in your Xero organisation.
Can Nomora create credit notes in Xero?
No. Make corrections and credit notes in Xero. Credits you apply in Xero are not recorded as booking payments, so check them in Xero.
